The word "salaš" comes from the Hungarian language and means a household consisting of a house and auxiliary facilities for farming the land and raising livestock. Their original purpose was to provide summer accommodation for the farmers, while a little later the owners of these farmhouses became permanent residents on their lands.

The beauty and old-time spirit of these farmsteads is captivating. These authentic architectural complexes are characteristic of the Pannonian Plain and represent folk architecture, as well as a special way of life and making a living.

The majority of farmsteads were built around 1848, and many of them were demolished after the Second World War. Today there are around 100 farmsteads, 25 of which have been adapted for tourists. The farmsteads are located outside the village, on its outskirts. They are surrounded by numerous trees, especially acacias, from which honey is obtained. The heart of every farmstead is its restaurant. Farmsteads are known for their hospitality, and rich and delicious traditional Vojvodinian meals, along with good wines, brandies and the sounds of tamburitza bands.

The word čarda is of Persian origin and means a canopy on four pillars. They were made to provide shelter from the sun and rain for travellers and horses.

Naturally, drinks and then food began to be sold in these shelters as they developed into buildings. Over time, musicians also came, first bagpipe players, then tamburitza players, and rooms could be rented for the night. Later, čarda were built near the piers of the ferries transporting people and livestock across the Danube, as well as in places where barges, including tugboats, on their upstream journey to Pest and Vienna were happy to dock.

Čarda have always been oases of peace, greenery, chill, good food, relaxation, and good times. These are places where you can forget the worries of everyday life and, of course, places where you can enjoy a good bite, especially for lovers of fish soup, fish stew and freshly baked river fish.

"... Čarda have always been oases of peace, greenery, chill, good food, relaxation, and good times..."

Castles of Vojvodina

Castles of VojvodinaSection Shape Icon

Vojvodina boasts around 70 chateaux, castles, villas and summer houses, which are architectural testimony to the former wealth of the rulers, nobles and landowners of the region. These magnificent buildings, which reflect the wealth and power of their former owners, were built in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

The castles of Vojvodina, which are a valuable cultural heritage, were built in different styles, because they belong to the transition period from baroque to classicism.

The Dunđerski, Lukač and Stratimirović families were the biggest builders of Vojvodina’s castles. The current purposes of these edifices are very different from the original ones. Today, these valuable buildings and estates have been turned into tourist and hospitality facilities, the administrative headquarters of agricultural estates and cooperatives, primary and secondary schools, factories and production facilities, apartments for the families of workers on the estates, while some are no longer in use.

The castles that currently function in the tourist-hotel-hospitality industry – Fantast, Ečka and Banatera - represent well-known tourist destinations, attracting many tourists with the various things they have to offer.
